the houseboats in SrinagarJammu & Kashmir are usually stationary. They are usually moored at the edges of the Dal Lake and Nageen lakes. Some of the houseboats there were built in the early 1900s, and are still being rented out to tourists. These houseboats are made of wood, and usually have intricately carved wood paneling. The houseboats are of different sizes, some having up to three bedrooms apart from a living room and kitchen.
Many tourists are attracted to Srinagar by the charm of staying on a houseboat, which provides the unique experience of living on the water in a cedar-paneled elegant bedroom, with all the conveniences of a luxury hotel
A luxury houseboat, like a luxury hotel has fine furniture, good carpets and modern bathroom fittings, while the 'D category' (the lowest category) of houseboats, like low-budget hotels, is spartanly furnished. Like hotels too, houseboats vary widely in their locations. Some overlook the main road, others look out onto lotus gardens and yet others face tiny local markets and villages, which are also floating on the lake. All houseboats, regardless of category, have highly personalized service. Not only is there always a "houseboy" for every boat, but the owner and his family are often close by. The cost per day of hiring a houseboat includes all meals and free rides from the houseboat to the nearest jetty and back, as no houseboat on the lakes is directly accessible from the banks.

Every standard houseboat provides a balcony in the front, a lounge, dining room, pantry and three or more bedrooms with attached bathrooms. All houseboats not moored to the bank of the river or lakes provide a shikara as a free service from the houseboat to the nearest Ghat (jetty). Virtually every houseboat in Srinagar has been provided with a municipal water connection.

  1. Hi,
We visited Kashmir and stayed in this houseboat, Dalgoma-The best on May 2nd, 2022.
We got a recommendation for this houseboat from a Facebook page. On reaching there at Srinagar, we contacted the owner of the houseboat and booked it for two nights on MAP plan.
We hired a Shikhara and reached the houseboat. It is an old houseboat lacking proper periodic maintenance, well, understandably though since there was no tourist for the last two years due to covid.
We were welcomed there by the caretaker. We tipped him handsomely on arrival in anticipation of a good service.
We rested for some time, had few drinks and then asked the caretaker for the dinner. At the dinner table, we were served with a small bowl of chicken with Dal, Roti, and rice. There was no refill for the chicken provided which was barely enough for any one of us. We asked for a refill for Dal and they served a soup of dal. No tadka, just boiled dal water with salt was served. They just served 10 rotis @ 2 per person and refused to give more. Pathetic!!
Frustrated, we called the lady owner but she refused to come to check the things.
The night went eventless but more drama was waiting for us at the breakfast table.
The caretaker informed us that the regular cook is on the leave and he (the caretaker) can only make tea, bread butter and omelets for us. Since 2 of us are allergic to eggs, we asked him to serve omelets for 3 of us and butter bread for two.
He served 3 omelets and precisely 4 pieces of bread on the table with 5 half-filled cups of tea. Again, he refused to provide any extra bread or tea for the breakfast.
Its first time in my life where I was experiencing such rude hospitality where they are serving everything in fixed quantity.
Now it was enough for us. We immediately decided to checkout and settled the payment for one day and called a shikhara to reach ashore. As soon as we called the shikhara, the caretaker “demanded” a tip. We reminded him about the tip on arrival and the worst services provided on which he sheepishly said that the meal comes from the owner’s kitchen and it is the owner who asked him to serve the meal in fixed quantity only.
Well, it was the worst stay of my life and requesting all, who are looking for this particular houseboat stay to please double check the meal part with the owner, who happens to be a lovely lady by the name Jahan. If you wish, you may reach the house boat at 7006935663.
